New Canaan is a picture perfect New England village. The town’s tag line, The Next Station to Heaven, is well deserved. With direct access to The Merritt Parkway (15) and a spur of the Metro North New Haven Line, New Canaan commuters can be in Manhattan in about an hour. Residents will often refer to various areas based on the geographical section of town such as the east or west side. There are also smaller titled neighborhoods known as Lost District and Silvermine.
New Canaan was incorporated as a town in 1801, with settlers arriving as early as 1731. New Canaan was originally an agricultural community but with the advent of the railway and highway, it became a haven for the wealthy, quickly becoming a year-round residential community. New Canaan has kept all of its charm and has a vibrant downtown shopping center with a combination of Mom & Pop stores, high-end chain stores, wonderful restaurants of almost every ethnicity, a well-loved teen center and a town movie theater.
New Canaan is well known for its mixture of vintage and new homes as well as the magnificent mid-century modern homes built by “The Harvard Five.” In the mid 20th century, five Harvard Graduate School architects migrated to New Canaan to build their visionary dream homes; Philip Johnson, Marcel Breuer, Landis Gore, John M. Johansen, and Eliot Noyes. Philip Johnson’s famed national treasure, the Glass House, is now available for public viewing. These mid-century modern homes are now being protected and coveted – a nice change from a few years back when some residents and builders were tearing them down.
New Canaan has some of the most beautiful public parks for town residents and others to enjoy; Waveny Park has over 300 acres and houses the beautiful Waveny House Mansion which is used for multiple public functions, the town’s public pool, multiple playing fields, walking and running paths, disc golf and even a driving range for golfers. Irwin Park offers strolling paths and passive land use. Mead Park has a wonderful enclosed play area for younger children, tennis courts and a great snack-bar style restaurant, and Kiwanis Park offers an old-fashioned swimming pond and play area for children.
New Canaan boasts some of the top ranked public schools in the state, with five public schools. The town is also home to three private schools; St. Aloysius School, St. Luke’s School and The New Canaan Country School.
There is one private golf club in New Canaan, The Country Club of New Canaan, as well as other private clubs known as The Field Club, The Winter Club and The Lake Club.
